How Jason Boosted His Solar System and Maximised Savings

Updated: Jul 29

At Rethink Energy Solutions, we love to share success stories from our clients. Recently, we had the pleasure of helping Jason, a Perth homeowner, enhance his energy efficiency and savings by upgrading his solar system.

The Project: Expanding Solar Capacity

Jason originally had a 6.6kW solar system, which had been serving his household well. However, he wanted to take his energy savings to the next level. After consulting with our team, Jason decided to add an additional 8.5kW of solar panels and install a battery storage system.

Why Upgrade?

1. Increased Energy Production: By adding 8.5kW to his existing 6.6kW system, Jason significantly increased his solar energy production capacity.

2. Energy Independence: The battery storage system allows Jason to store excess energy produced during the day for use at night, further reducing his reliance on the grid.

3. Long-Term Savings: With the enhanced solar system and battery storage, Jason is now set to save around $2,000 per year on his energy bills.

The Installation

Our team at Rethink Energy Solutions ensured a smooth and efficient installation process. Here’s how we did it:

1. Site Assessment: We conducted a thorough assessment of Jason’s property to determine the best placement for the new panels and battery system.

2. System Design: Our engineers designed a customized system that seamlessly integrated with his existing setup.

3. Professional Installation: Our certified technicians handled the installation, ensuring everything was up to code and optimized for maximum efficiency.

4. Monitoring and Support: Post-installation, we provided Jason with a comprehensive monitoring solution to track his energy production and usage, along with ongoing support.

Detailed Economics of Jason’s Bill with Synergy

Initial Setup

• Original Solar System: 6.6kW

• Additional Solar System: 8.5kW

• Total Solar Capacity: 15.1kW

• Battery Storage: 10kWh

Energy Production and Consumption

• Average Daily Production: The 15.1kW system produces approximately 60kWh per day on average.

• Household Consumption: Jason’s household consumes around 40kWh per day.

Synergy Billing Details

• Synergy’s Standard A1 Tariff: $0.29 per kWh

• Feed-in Tariff (FIT): $0.03 per kWh until 3pm, $0.10 per kWh after 3pm for excess solar energy exported to the grid

Monthly Savings:

• Energy Produced: 60kWh/day × 30 days = 1,800kWh/month

• Energy Consumed: 40kWh/day × 30 days = 1,200kWh/month

• Excess Energy Exported: 1,800kWh - 1,200kWh = 600kWh/month

• Energy Self-Consumed: 1,200kWh

• Cost Without Solar: 1,200kWh × $0.29 = $348

• Savings from Solar: $348/month

Feed-in Tariff Earnings:

• Assumption: 400kWh of excess energy is exported before 3pm, and 200kWh after 3pm

• FIT Earnings Before 3pm: 400kWh × $0.03 = $12

• FIT Earnings After 3pm: 200kWh × $0.10 = $20

• Total FIT Earnings: $12 + $20 = $32/month

Total Monthly Savings:

• Self-Consumption Savings: $348

• FIT Earnings: $32

• Total Savings: $348 + $32 = $380/month

Annual Savings:

• Total Annual Savings: $380/month × 12 months = $4,560

Adjustments with Battery Storage:

• Battery Storage Utilisation: Assuming 10kWh stored and used daily, which further reduces grid reliance.

• Energy Shifted to Battery: 10kWh/day × 30 days = 300kWh/month

• Additional Self-Consumption Savings: 300kWh × $0.29 = $87/month

• Adjusted Total Monthly Savings: $380 + $87 = $467

• Adjusted Total Annual Savings: $467/month × 12 months = $5,604

Conclusion

Jason’s decision to upgrade his solar system and add battery storage has led to substantial savings on his energy bills. By increasing his solar capacity and optimizing his energy consumption with battery storage, Jason is now saving approximately $5,604 annually. This upgrade not only reduces his reliance on Synergy’s grid power but also contributes to a more sustainable and cost-effective energy solution for his household.
